I have my home and contents insurance through M&SMoney.. I have 8 yrs no claims but hav'nt claimed on any insurance for at least 15 yrs and I have just recieved my policy renewal. Obviously It has gone up, even though the house price has dropped. But I was shocked to see it's actually gone up Over 10%..From £427 to £471..I rang them to say I thought it was a bit much and was told it was due to the increase in insurance premium tax.. I obviously told them i'm shopping around..Anyone any recomendations?

I`m with More Than. I`ve always found them OK. You get a discount if you do your buildings and contents with them. If you recommend them to someone else and they take it up you both get M&S vouchers as well.
I was with More Than, but got a quote that was less than half for the same cover.
If you are over 50, get a quote from RIAS- they only insure "good" risks and are very good.

thanks SJ I will go onto these compare sites, I just can't believe M&S have the cheek to put it up by so much.. I think I will stop the misses shopping there if they rip people off like this.. anyone know how much the insurance premium tax went up by?

thanks gingejbee. will check them out..i'm well over 50 mores the pity.
Check out Age UK (formerly age concern) mine is very reasonable.
We are with the NFU,it's very reasonable.
..and NFU is top of the Which? recommended house insurer list
Am with RIAS find them excellent.
I moved to Lloyds TSB this year and got both home and contents for less than £200. No previous loyalties to them, they just came top on compare website.
Do you have a supermarket loyalty card? If so go through that and you might get some points too.
We're with Halifax at the moment, the Nationwide is also worth looking at, they have good discount deals on from time to time. We always shop around each renewal - insurance companies to rely on people not bothering to move! BTW I have my car insured with M&S though, it was the best rate for me this time round.
i'm with LV - i renewed with themt htis year as it was £200 lower than any other quote i got!
scrub my last answer - that's car insurance
i pay 12 pounds a month for building and contents ins with ING
IPT went up on 4th January by 1%, from 5% to 6%. Premiums are generally rising to cover the cost of fraudulent claims. Is your home cover valuation based on the number of rooms or rebuilding costs? Valuation of contents, and type of cover will also affect the premium, although Index linking should not make a great difference this year.
I’m paying less that £110 for buildings and contents insurance. The contents cover is to the value of £50k and the buildings to £1,000,000 – but in reality the buildings would be limited to the complete re-build costs.

So unless you live in a castle, you are being ripped off big-time for not shopping around.
As others have indicated, cheapest is not necessarily the best – you will discover this when it comes to making a claim.
Make sure you do your application through a cashback website like Quidco as well.

By the way, Building Insurance is not linked to the market value of your property, its the rebuild costs.
