I couldn't begin to tell you which colour to choose, but if it's a big room then make sure it's not too dark. If there's a window there, then that's better, but keep it bright and fresh.
Light colours generally add to the feeling of size and spaciousness.  Dark colours can be depressing if there's isn't a window or a lot of light.  Many of the DIY stores like B & Q sell mini sampler tins of paint.  Why not buy two or three and experiment by painting a patches of each colour and see which you like best.  Some of the "soft" shades, i.e. soft rose, soft blue, soft peach  have a gentle warmth without being "in your face" in terms of colour.  And these relatively neutral colours will blend better with your  carpets.
If you've got any soft furnishings in the hall that you arent going to change, like curtains, then I'd take one of them down to B&Q and hold it up against all the paint colours they have (you know those little charts so you can choose which paint you want them to mix up for you) until something jumps out at you as right!
