Google search bar

Something has happened to my google page. I used to have a small search bar to write in but now it is three times the size. As soon as I start typing in it, it shifts to the top of the screen and there is ghost writing. What have I done? To my knowledge I haven`t done anything but earlier on my computer shut down of it`s own accord. Maybe there was some sort of update coming my way that I hadn`t noticed. How do I get back to the original appearance?

What browser are you using? IE8, Firefox etc...

Thanks for your answer cancross. I`ve just solved the problem. Google settings had changed itself to Google Instant so I`ve changed it back again.
