I concur, a great man, one of the old school...

Norman stanley fletcher up there with basil fawlty as one of the finest comic character's of all time.

Agree the Ronnie Barker was a great comedian - not forgetting some superb dramatic performances - and he will be sadly missed.

I don't know what you mean by smuttyness hopalong (it makes me think of Benny Hill), but I think Ronnie could write double entendres and wink-wink nudge-nudge comedy with the best of them - Fatbelly Jones was perhaps my favorite of his creations. However, if you mean the shock-comedy tactics employed by some comedians (and not just modern ones) then I'd agree.

A great writer too. I shall go and light Four Candles in honour....
....................nah fork 'andles..........
Yes, he was a true comedy great. I also remember the classic mastermind sketch, a real genius.
There were always a few subleties in the credits at the end of his shows if you looked for them. One I remember was a credit listing for a scene shifter or suchlike called 'Norma Stitz' and there were others.
He was brilliant, although I must point out that the Mastermind sketch was written by David Renwick of one foot in the grave, fame.

Lovely man, it's very sad.

...four candles from me too.....

Very sad, I saw him receiving his lifetime achievement award on TV just recently, and found the obvious affection between him, Ronnie Corbett and David Jason very touching!

I have a CD containing 2 porridge episodes, which I dug out sunday night to listen to (I listen to tapes instead of reading before I go to asleep sometimes)

I hadn't listened to them for a while, seems all the more poignant now.

very, very sad. I am going to snap all the handles off my forks in tribute - and light them...;o)

Sad day, but he leaves us a legacy that will last
I was so shocked and saddened when I heard, he will be greatly missed.  :-(
