Determining the sex of a young kitten isn't easy--a kitten will squirm, bite, and try to play with you when you hold it. A male kitten's anus and genitals form an opening that looks like a colon (:), and a female's form an opening that looks like a semicolon (;). Males' openings are farther apart than females'.

Its difficult. I got a kitten from the RSPCA. They carefully inspected its genitalia and declared it a female. We named it Dora. When it started to lick its penis we had to rename it! (Oscar as it happens - Dora -Dorian -Picture of Dorian Grey -Oscar Wilde - well I thought that was clever at the time)
