I bought some royal pelargoniums last summer and have had them outside in pots all winter. i have no idea whether they are perennials or not, but they're looking pretty dead. Can't work out whether to hang on to them in case they have yet to leap into growth, or write them off and chuck them. Anyone know whether they're perennials or not please?

You can give them a go but it's a fairly good chance they would've died. ost of the palargoniums are not frost hardy although they will go down fairly low if sheltered. Try peeling the bark back with your thumbnail low down on the plants...if the wood underneath is green, you'll have a chance.
