An art collector kept some valuable paintings in his flat. The flat had just one entrance door which was fitted with six locks. While he was away a burglar, who was skilled at picking locks, tried to open the door. However, although he could pick the the locks, he failed to get inside the flat. Why?

were they combination locks?
It was bolted on the inside. The art collector had left through a window or down a waste chute
Question Author
The answer given was the flat owner left three locks unlocked and three locked, so try as he might, he could not get all six locks unlocked together.
I don't get that - surely any experienced lock-picker would be able to suss that three were not locked.
Is there some info missing? Surely once the 3 that were locked had been picked then all 6 would be unlocked.

boxtops and bibblebub, this was my retort to the presenter, yet he was adamant that the burglar tried to unpick the unlocked door, I countered by explaining the original question stated the burglar unpicked all six locks. His retort, was that the burglar "COULD" unpick the locks not "DID" unpick the locks.
