Watching Gordon on C4 re sharks.. he says they chop of the fins (to make soup) then let the shark back out to sea. where they then perish .. do sharks need fins to guide/swim/live.. or have they died from shock having part of their body hacked off.?!

They can't swim without fins, they use them to propel themselves through the water. Sounds similar to killing an elephant just to take its tusks. Disgusting.
ohh hippy, really?... tut.... thats just soooo sickening...........

i hate to hear of things like this ......
That is animal cruelty. Where are the animal rights advocacies... Why aren't they doing something about this?
I think he's filming in the Far East where they eat a lot of shark fin soup, the animal rights people don't get much of a look-in there.
People do eat shark; I wonder why the sharks aren't kept or saved for eating.

I understand they eat shark.. but they just chopped the fins off and left the rest.. ok.. now they are telling us they bring the rest of the shark back.. however have more fins... poor man-eating sharks...
It's highly prized at a Chinese banquet and is a combination of being tasty with a texture effect (that is part of Chinese cuisine). I have eaten more than my fair share over the years and living 8 years out there in HK and on the mainland.

I am not condoning this but Gordon is laying it on with a trowel about this........the meat goes into animal food etc. Yes, there may have been an incident or two but this is gross exaggeration and irresponsible.

Having said all that the Chinese are pretty brutal as to their cuisine and I could share some stories....... There's an old adage in HK, "If it m oves they eat it, if it stays still they build on it." There are, though, some massive regional differences in eating habiits never mind religious differences when it comes to food.
Ok - now watching the programme - the film is shark fin catching in Liberia using Atlantic sharks; Liberia being one of the poorest countries in the world............and legally it is now banned though there are processing factories breaking the law.
Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver were named in a Sunday Times report today for serving endangered eels in their restaurants, and only removed them from the menu when the ST contacted them. So they're not as caring as they'd like you to believe.
Hypocracy of the highest order Mr Ramsey - you know as well as i do how fois gras served in your restaurants is created.

Set your own house (and restaurants!) in order ...
Sharks do not have swim bladders like other fish, if they stop swimming they sink, and to swim they do need their fins.
