Let's get rid of these holiday camps and lock this scum up in a proper nick. Where will they go while their charming abode is refitted? Let's outsource the whole thing to a country that knows how to operate a penal system.

Absolutely ummm, couldn't agree with you more. You need to see it for people to understand it.
Sqad - I was talking about serving folk in the forces, not those incarcerated in HMPs....
When someone on AB who has actually BEEN in a prison(and I know at least one) posts maybe we can get a reasoned argument, and not just the opinions of those who probably have never even seen the inside of one?
DT....ah! sorry.

Although I think that my comment would apply to both..............maybe!
prisons should not be anything approaching holiday camps. Prison are there, imho, to protect the rest of society from the criminals and the rehabilitation factor should be that there are so awful that no-one would want to go back.

If prisoners cause damage then they should have to live in the squalor they create.
So I can't form an opinion from the people I know who have been or the books that I have read...which are many..!

people return to prisons again and again, QED they are not harsh enough, simple!
ummmm
I aimed that and everybody and anybody.
If you think it apllies to you solely it doesn't.it applies to us all.
ummmm....I agree....but some do.....three of my sons did it, but I feel that we have missed the point here...........I was showing my lack of confidence in preparing people psychologically for a change in life style........just a notion that I have ;-)
Have never been in a UK one - only a police station cell in the Highlands and the door was left open - we camped out in there one stormy, foul night - student times. Super breakfast.....

Have been in American prisons and jails, the latter for a false accusation for about hours and the police realised they had made an error. I was a visitor to county jails and the prisons - but didnt have to witness a termination. Pretty grim in those places in Texas, even though most of them were fairly modern.
Invictus...I'm sure I'm not the only one who knows people that have been to prison. Or have read books about it.....
I have a friend who works in a prison. they do have tv's as they spend most of their time locked in cells. buying a cheap tv is probably a small investment against more damage through boredom or psychiatric issues.

I also know of someone who was in an open prison. he "earned" some kind of games console, and was frequently allowed out for trips with his friends and family. way too easy, in my opinion.

the suffering is about a losing your liberty. personally, I think the family and friends suffer more.
I assume that it was because the inmates were intoxicated that caused the violence. Bit of a paradox here when many people are sent to prison due to violence caused by drink.
How come prisoners get en suite facilities, but some serving soldiers don't?
I've felt like rioting, when I have stayed in Holiday Camps....................(:0 (
Den - if you riot at Butlins you will get a second holiday free courtesy of HMP.....go for it!

Bit like the old joke of 1st prize a week at Butlins, 2nd prize is two weeks....
Kath...you call a bog in a cell an ensuite?

DT // nearly 1/3rd of those in prison are ex-services. //

That may be true but it is also true that there are the homeless and those from dysfunctional families who join the services to get a home and support . Therefore when they are demobbed they go back to their old lives which frequently involves drugs and crime.

Another factor is that several years of army life does not equipt you for civilian life it takes quite a while to adjust. It's a complete change in culture which a short demob course can not alter.
agree, modeller.
