My wife and I have decided that this year we're not going to spend daft sums of money on numerous presents for family and friends. We've totted up roughly how much we would have spent on these gifts and decided that we'll donate the money to various charities instead. I've already donated some of my money to my three favourite charities but now I'm struggling – not because I'm unable to find worthy causes but because once you start to look into it, there are literally thousands and thousands of them.

Any suggestions?

my Christmas card money is going to Clic Sargent rather than me sending out cards to everyone.

I shall also be making a donation to my nephews fund, he is suffering from leukeamia and is going through a tough time of chemo over Christmas. http://web.me.com/bla...ns_Fight/Welcome.html
Great idea Birdie1971 which self and spouse have used for several years. Best to tell immediate family what is happening so they stop gifting to oneself. We choose charities as we may each year with donations exceeding what we would expend on presents. No problem with the rellies. Check out charities which do not have admin or publicity costs at all - or beyond an acceptable percentage. Those which advertise on the box are out due to expenses they incur using donations received.
