32A. 'Dan' is an old archaic form of title for 'master', 'sir'. Stick the 'u' (for 'university) in the middle and you get 'duan', an old Scottish word meaning 'canto'.
I don't know what 'alas' has got to do with bones dedicient in marrow,but I put it as the answer because 'alas' = 'unfortunately'.

Thanks Nical - just found "Dan" in Chambers!
just seen this so sorry for late response;

marrow is also another word / description for bones and the first vertebra is = ATLAS
bone can also be T as in T-Bone steak so deficient in 'T' gives ALAS = unfortunately.
