Using Windows 7
With respect medec, you've said yourself "After a bit of googling I found a site and was able to re-assign that shortcut"

So what you are basically saying is "I have a undisclosed bit of software that enables me to set shortcut keys for symbols which isn't working"

Our problem is that it's not possible to help when we don't have a clue what software you've installed to enable you to reassign keyboard shortcuts.
Not Win7 ... what are you writing the document in?

Chuck - that's exactly right I guess and you've been really helpful. Now that I know ALT+0176 works, how can I get a CTRL + shortcut. I've got Microsoft Office 2007 installed and type into windows 2007.
°° Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is also the facility to click on Insert>Symbol when typing in a Word document.
