New electric blanket needed - advice would be appreciated

I am planning on purchasing an electric blanket and thought that it would be a pretty straightforward task. However there are under and over blankets, ones that seem to heat quickly and others less quickly. I am confused and any input anybody can give would be appreciated.

I want a double bed sized blanket that covers all the bed (I had one years ago that only seemed to cover a tiny bit in the middle of the bed), dual control not needed, one that can be used when in the bed (it is years since I had one and that just preheated the bed) and, if possible, one that cuts off after a time.

It is just for the three of us - me and the moronic moggies.

do the mogs sleep on top of the electric blanket and you underneath? If this is the case then an overblanket would be dangerous as the cat bodies would cause it to overheat and it might even start to smoulder. If you can't find one with a timr then get a timeswitch plug that goes into the socket and plug the blanket into that
I wouldn't want one which stayed on when I was in it.... and you will find the cats gravitate to anything warm (but I don't have to tell you that!) I haven't had an electric blanket for years but I would go for an underblanket that warms the bed up before you get in, then switch it off before you do. That (IMO) is the safest version.
when i was on the night shift i use to leave an electric oil fired heater on all night so they would not get cold

plus the bedroom was nice and warm when i went up to bed :)

Chloe was thinking - "wish that stupid f*****g woman would go away so I can get some sleep".

At present I have a duvet that I am allowed to sleep under. Frankie sometimes comes under the duvet but Merlin usually sleeps elsewhere.

When I had my first dog (bullmastiff german shepherd) I had an electric blanket which preheated the bed. Between the blanket and the warm dog life was cosy.

I think that I will just get a basic preheating blanket. They are not all that expensive. I would really like a feather filled duvet (I have a polyester one) but I am not sure if I 'need' it or just 'want' it.

DrF - you are as bad as me. I have been known to get up during the night to put the central heating on so the monsters could cling to the radiators. Merlin is a long haired cat and I think that she could survive in the Arctic. Frankie has some excess body fat - it isn't his fault - it was the steroids the vet gave him!

;-)

I am going to see if I can get some sleep now. I am not a good sleeper at the best of times - last night was extra bad.

wolf we have just lashed out on small electric radiators for the bedrooms..they cost about 40 quid each and keep the rooms cosy at night without needing to heat the whole house. Not sure about running costs but maybe an option?

woofgang - to be honest last week I turfed Frankie off the bed and when I got in the place where his little fat body had been was so very warm and cosy and this is what set me thinking of an electric blanket.

I am currently sleeping in the spare bedroom on a mattress on the floor. The room is small and would be easily heated. However the door stays slightly open all the time to allow the furries access to the bathroom where the litter tray is.

Normally I sleep in the room next to this but the roof is leaking and the wall is wet and it would appear that it may take some time yet for all the people/landlords responsible for the cost of the repair to actually come to a decision on workmen etc. This has been ongoing since July.

Both rooms are in the attic.

I was hoping to win the lottery this weekend so that I can just go and buy a property suitable for all three of us.
Most underblankets now available can be left on all night while you are in the bed and are completely safe, even cheap ones.
