Is it true that the Post Office is actually covered by Irish money and does that include NS&I Direct Savers account ? If so, have I anything to worry about ? When I put money in I was told that any amount (up to around £1m I think) was safe rather than just £50,000. Is this still the case ?

NS&I has no connection with Irish banks whatsoever. It's not a Post Office product.

Some Post Office products are with and Irish bank - not sure of the latest situation on them

Thanks dzug, set my mind at rest.
Anyway, I thought the guarantee given by the Irish government is greater (£100,000)than that given by the UK government here (£50,000), although maybe the Irish guarantee only applies in Ireland
In October a new Bank of Ireland (UK) Ltd was set up to be completely separate from Bank of Ireland and to manage all the accounts etc at the Post Office.
