we used to keep port in ours
They were (and are) used for serving port, wines, and spirits. As Redhelen says - it doesn't matter.
Lovely........I agree with heathfield.
Port - my biggest antique regret of all time was not buying an elm ships table which I saw in France (in a shopping mall antique fair in Versaille), living in St Germain-en-Laye in the 80s. In the centre of the table were the clips and wood frame for the ship's decanter and then there were 12 cut rounded notches around the edge to take the glass stems in - and it was complete with decanter and glasses. It was 800 pounds equivalent at the time - I do rue not getyting it but it was a fair amount of cash at the time but I hate to think what it would have been worth today.
Hi there eiphos, with all the interest recently with the Titanic champagne find etc.. It would be nice to see a picture and have some information of which ship this came from, was it a wreck?
Ships decanters weren't always used on ships, its the shape that gives them that title.
They're handy for later in the evening when the hand gets a bit unsteady. Their shape means you'd have a job spilling one.

Thank-you all, think it's going to be brandy!
sadly Micky, don't think it came from a wreck - just an old aunt of mine E
