DO I NEED A NEW GEARBOX?

I recently noticed a noise coming from the gearbox. I took it to a garage where they told me i needed a new gearbox. I was tiold it could 'go' at anytime...ive looked for a secondhand one but finding it hard to find one. Someone told me that i could uses a similiar type gearbox not for this model of car. The car is a toyota avensis 1.6 5spd manual. Can a 1.6 corolla or carina 1.6 gearbox fit this car? Im a novice so dont know what to do.....thanks for any feedback....

gearbox packed in on sunday whilst driving....wasnt going into 4th gear first....then suddenly all gears were not moving....managed to source a second hand one and had it fitted on mondsay.......it drives like new now!!!!!!!!! i can believe the power im getting now. The car sounds very quiet now too compared to before. I must have got so used to the old one i never realised how bad it was! total cost, parts and labour 250 quid. 3 month gurantee thrown in too. car was a 1.6 in the end
