Word that describes a series of connected rooms.

There is a word that describes the linear lay-out of rooms within a building such that one could walk from the first room to the second room, from the second room to the third room, etc.  This is as opposed to having (most of) the rooms arranged around a central lobby.

This is a design feature of some large stately homes in Britain & France

The word is like 'colonaded' or 'palisaded' (which I know mean something different).

Probably not the same in Europe, but here in the U.S. it would be called "shotgun".  A shotgun house typically has one room leading into the next without hallways. This style of house is particularly well suited for hot climates because one can open the front and back doors, and the breeze will flow through the entire house, and the porch provides shade for outdoor visiting. Shotgun architecture is now recognized as an African American contribution to American architectural styles.  So called becasue a shot fired in the front door would go out the back door without hitting anything...

It wouldn't be 'catenate(d)', would it? That means "in a chain formation" and sounds somewhat similar to 'colonnaded'.

Nice try, QM, but there is definately another word.  I remember reading the word in the Telegraph about 10 years ago but can't for the life of me recall it!

In Denmark we call it en suite, I have a suspicion that they call it that in France too :0)
