Hi All,

I am 26 and for as long as I remember I always feel fatigued and have to keep myself busy otherwise I just get tired and fall to sleep!

Last year I went to the doctors and asked to be referred for having constant phelm on my throat and I was referred to a sinus specialist and had various xrays done, took allergy tablets and nasal spray and nothing helped so I carried on like normal.

It has only been recently diagnoised with another doctor that I have GERD and I have been prescribed Lansoprazole 30mg, one tablet per day.

I orignally took the tablet in the morning but it was giving me a really bad pain on the left side of my chest so I went back to the doctors after everyone made me and after pushing around my stomach she said it was heartburn.....

Can anyone tell me how long it will take for these tablets to show some kind of relief because I am feeling really tired and I am getting this burning sensation in my stomach and chest which i didn't experience before.

I have been on these tablets since 1991!

I take them at night as I have acid reflux and this is when it's at it's worse. If I forget one I will have stabbing and burning pains in my chest. After taking a tablet I will have relief within the hour.

I am surprised that you havent been offered a Endoscopy, which is basically a camera put down your throat and into your stomach to find out if you have anything else going on.

I have had in the past, two barium meals and three Endoscopies to see if my acid reflux has progressed into something more sinister. Touch wood, it hasn't.

I would go back to your Doctors soon and let them know.

Good luck.

I'm on them as well and they have made a big difference though I've also been referred to gastro for that and other tummy issues.

I still get some pain in my chest and tummy despite the tablets, maybe they're reducing the acid rather than clearing or there is an ongoing problem like a hernia or ulcer or similar?

Have you changed your diet so that you're not encouraging the acid? Do you smoke or are overweight and are you on any other medications or vitamins, prescribed or over the counter?

As regards tiredness, have you had a full blood count done recently to check you're not anaemic or anything like that?
Hi bunnaaay5! You have what is called silent GERD, or LPR. This means that you don't necessarily feel heartburn in your upper stomach but you are refluxing and the acid from your stomach is attacking your oesophagus and vocal chords. Mucus is produced by your body as a protective mechanism to coat your throat and stop any burning.
It is very, very difficult to treat. Because the acid is attacking your sensitive throat area, it needs to be wiped out all the time, not just for 24 hrs, so unless the tablets are taken twice a day and have a long enough duration to cover 'all the time' then even a small amount of acid is going to affect you and the mucus will still be produced!
The symptoms you are getting with those tablets are side effects and can be very unpleasant. You need to go back to your Dr and get another similar type of medication that will not affect you , maybe Omaprazole. You just need to find one that suits.
Also look at your diet. There are certain things that will make the mucus worse, like chocolate, coffee, onions, tomatoes, garlic, chilli, milk. Trial and error will let you know which ones effect you.
Good luck!

Thank you for all your advice, i have looked at my diet and cut out my orange juice a day, i have completely cut out fizzy drinks and alcohol. I have never drunk tea or coffee and I am trying my best to cut out chocolate....if I do have some it is one packet of buttons at the most twice a week. I love onions and tomato based sauces for lasagna and spag bol which i have completely cut out.

I do not take any medication and rarely have paracetamol. I have never smoked and for a girl of 5 6" I am 10 stone, which isn't really overweight.

I had a full medical last year and my blood count come back with good levels and the doctor was really pleased.

I guess i will see how these tablets go for a few more days and if they are no good go back to the doctors.

You will feel better in a month's time. You should consult you doctor. You also see to that if you are taking any medicine along with Lansoprazole. Sometimes that will also affect your health. You can find more details on this medicine at http://www.internatio...com/lansoprazole.html
