Have just bought one and don't really understand how to work it - have tried it out on a lamp with no success - have depressed a couple of the little segments, rotated the dial clockwise until it is showing the time now and plugged it into the socket - however as soon as I switch the wall plug on the lamp comes on (even though it's programmed for about half an hour later) the red switch at the side of the time is up which I assume is the on position and the switch under the lamp shade is also on. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

Try it with the switch on the timer set to 'off'.

Ah..... we may have something here SR as the lamp hasn't come on this time - will fiddle for a bit and let you know - thank you -now you mention it I suppose when the timer hits those little segments, the switch is propelled to on.?
Did that do the trick? It's so long since I used one I've forgotten how they work.
