Dear all

Please can someone help me with the followng - it's driving me crazy!

There's a song, I think it might be by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and from one of his musicals... (but could be wrong) - I think the first two lines are something like

"Take that look off your face... I can see through your smile..."

- or something to that effect.  I think it's from a show, or a musical theatre production, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I heard it... Needless to say I cannot find anything on line... aaargh!!!!!

Does this ring any bells with anyone, or am I going slightly mad???

Any help much appreciated!

Thanks

Evita?  That song was a hit in the 70s, I remember, and could be this musical.
marti webb?

It was indeed sung by Marti Webb, but it came from his musical show 'Tell Me on a Sunday' which, from the links I found on Google, put it in the early 80s.  Apparently, 'Tell Me on a Sunday' was one part of his two part musical 'Song and Dance' the second part being 'Variations'.  There's plenty of info on-line, but watch out for pop-ups and the like - hence why I haven't given you any links here!

TAKE THAT LOOK OFF YOUR FACE

You must be mistaken, it couldn't have been
you couldn't have seen him yesterday.
He's doing some deal up in Baltimore now,
I hate it when he's away.

You must be mistaken, I'm sure that you are.
There's more than one car with stickers on
and lots of young guys wear corduroy pants,
and I'd know if he hadn't gone.

Take that look off your face.
I can see through your smile.
You would love to be right.
I bet you didn't sleep good last night,
couldn't wait to bring all of that bad news to my door.
Well, I've got news for you: I knew before.

If I'm not mistaken, this is nothing new,
that I can tell you how it began.
I noticed a change, but I just closed my eyes,
as only a woman can.
No, I didn't dig deep.
I did not want to know.
Well, you don't interfere
when you're scared of the things you might hear.
Bet you think I should end this right now as you would do.
Well, my fair weather friend, I am not you.

Take that look off your face!
I can see through your smile.
You would love to be right.
I bet you didn't sleep good last night,
couldn't wait to bring all of that bad news to my door.
Well, I've got news for you: I knew before.
I can see through your smile.
You would love to be right.
I bet you didn't sleep good last night,
couldn't wait to bring all of that bad news to my door.
Well, I've got news for you:
I knew before!

Musical was "Tell Me On A Sunday"

Marti Webb original

I know that song very well because the soundtrack LP was one of my dad's favourite albums. I think the "Song and Dance" thing came later - there was a TV special with Sarah Brightman doing "Tell Me On A Sunday" for the first half, then Wayne Sleep coming on and prancing about for an hour. I'm sure there was some good reason for this.
I think Denise Van Outen recently starred in this in the WEst End.
