When I was at primary school we were only allowed to use pens in the last year when we were working for our 11 plus exam. My year was the first year to be issued with biros - our desks still had the old inkwells. This would have been 1964.
I was in the Fifth Form at school - which would have been the mid-40s - when one of my richer form-mates appeared one day with a great fat new type of pen called a Biro that cost 5, a fortune in those days.
chakka you must be mistaken 5 then was what my father was paid for a weeks work as a coal face miner. 5 bob perhaps?
I'm sure chakka is right.  Remember when the new electronic calculators came out and cost 400?  Now they are included with the cost of a keyring.
