On the opening credits to the simpsons where marje is in the supermarket and maggie gets scanned - what flashes up on the till?

nothing, it happens so quickly that it's illegible. There is a spoof episode which is narrated by Troy McClure, in which he asks the same question, in a kind of "join us after the break to find out" way. But the answer given is nonsense, it's just a p*ss-take.

Thats not so soozmac, until my video recorder packed in I could freeze frame and see what it showed but now I have a vastly inferior DVD player so I can no longer do it. If you have a top class video player you can see what the till price is but sorry I cant remember.

I think I remember seeing a documentary with the makers, and it said that what flashes up is the birthdate of Matt Groening's child.

Matt Groeing's two children, Homer and Abraham, were born in 1989 and 1991 respectively.

I once saw a documentary about the simpsons and it said that the the figure that flashes on the till was the annual cost to raise a child in the US. Dunno if they were being serious though, might just be a random number they thought of.
