does anyone know why some pubs have next to the name "freehouse" - what does freehouse mean then?

It means they are not tied to a brewery and can purchase their beers etc from whom they wish, they are becoming a rare commodity though.

blast, so its not free beer then!!!

No but alot cheaper than other pubs
