I'm going to visit friends in New York and want to use my samsung D500 to make local calls over there. I have a contract with Vodafone. Can I unlock my phone and get a pay-as-you-go sim card over there to make these calls? If not, what do I need to do?

Thanks

John

Hi John.  I am really sorry to hijack your question when I have no idea of the answer, but I had posted a query here about my D500 ages ago and wondered if you have any ideas?  The link to the question is:

Again - really sorry and I hope someone much more technologically minded than me (ie a 2 year old!) can respond to your question.

Right, the phone is tri-band, and so will work in the states.  You don't need Vodafone to 'unlock' the phone, because luckily Vodafone don't lock their phones, so you can use any sim card in your phone already (try one of your mates' sim cards in it, it should work.)  This means that all you need to do is get an American PAYG simcard, or phonecard (or other) when you're out in the states, and you should be able to make local calls over there no problem!

Shivvy - can't answer all your questions as I don't own the phone, but will try a few...

Regarding the issue about makling the phone ring for longer, Andytuk was right, max is 30 seconds.  You can do it his way (yes, divert the call to your own number - this means that you'll be diverting it to answerphone after 30 secs).  On some phones you can simply type in a code: **61*[type in answerphone number]*11*30#  (where [type in answerphone number] means type in your own number.

As for MP3s as ringtones/alarm sounds, as far as I can establish, it <b>is</b> possible - play around with it some more - try hooking it up to a computer if you can - then you might be able to have a look around inside it?
Most phones don't like playing MP3s as ringtones and so will only play .wav files.  You could try converting part of the MP3 you want into a .wav file, and then copying it to the appropriate place in your phone (however this would require you to use a computer probably?

Sorry I couldn't be any more help - If I can find someone I know with one of these phones, I'll have a play and get back you with any answers!!

Friend you can easily unlock your mobile using the unlocking code.I found the site http://www.mobile-unl.../samsung-d500/rs2wp9/ .This site provides you the unlocking service at $ 1.64 US Dollars .You can use this for unlocking.
