Advice on DSLR Cameras

Hi All,
I'm thinking about buying a DSLR camera. I don't need anything all singing and dancing and don't want to spend a fortune. Can anyone recommend which brand is best? and an idea what the difference is between the model types.

Last year I wanted a bridge type camera ... not a DSLR, but something with more control than the average compact digital.

I hav a bridge Panasonic Lumix FZ-38, had it for about a year (think the FZ-45 is just out) and it does an axcellent job. It has great auto capabilities and is also a good way to learn photography as it provides full manual, aperture and shutter modes along with a host of other modes. About £200.

the Panasonic DSLRs are said to be good - smaller and lighter than others, with slightly different technology (I think Olympus cameras use it too); but I haven't tried it out myself - I've got the same as mastadon. The plus with DSLRs is they cope better with light and shade as they have bigger sensors. The minus is having to change lenses, as DSLR lenses don't cover anything like as wide a range as on bridge cameras; when I had an old 35mm SLR I was always missing pictures while I struggled to put the appropriate lens on..
