A friend has a wholesale book business stuck in the dark ages without any computerisation. He is convinced that barcoding would not work as he deals in a lot of end of line stock, prices and discounts vary for every title etc etc. Although I know zilch about barcoding, I'm sure there is a system out there that would give hime the flexibiliy he needs. Any pointers welcome.

The ISBN of the book appears on every book, as everyone knows. Nowadays the same ISBN number also appears in barcoded form on the book cover. With a barcode reader he could very quickly record books going in and out (sales), with no chance of recording the wrong ISBN.
You perhaps need to ask him how he 'logs' the stock currently - using barcodes tied back to a stock management system on a computer is the obvious way forward.
Unless he sells the same book at a different price then barcoding is the way to go.

When I was researching, some time ago, there were a lot of soft ware packages out there, barcode readers and barcode label makers.
Barcode reading is the easy bit. Stock management of his business using a computer package designed for books, is really what we are talking about.
Even my mobile phone reads bar codes now!! Madness!!
Yet again answers are provided and yet the OP appears not to bother to come back to give feedback. So it is impossible to know if it has been a complete waste of time.
