Brilliant. I love programmes like Time Team too, I am always amazed that history can be found only six inches under the earth.
I wish, boxy, I can think of no reason at all why some Anglo-Saxon king shouldn't have buried a hoard of gold in our garden but it seems none of them bothered.

But how do you know that jno. Have you dug down deep enough ?
I have dug down to the era of the dinosaurs, TOH. All I found was a 1999 20p, but I think that have dropped out of my own pocket. I left it there for the archaeologists of the future.
We have the site of a Roman Settlement on the hill (yes in Norfolk!) behind us. Nothing found yet though. We found a wild boar tooth, exciting (not). Our house is over 200 years old and we have found the site where the original residents buried their rubbish, but still no buried treasure!!
What amazes me is when they dig a fragment of pottery up, and they can tell you what the whole pot looked like.

What also makes me wonder is, where is the rest of the pot, surely it should be somewhere around?
As we speak a backdated council tax demand is on its way, along with a warning not to be mixing recyclables with plastics plus a request to see Mr & Mrs Uggs copy of the planning application.

AOG I agree entirely, they did up a bit of flower pot and say "Ah! that's 12th century Estrucan wotnot" - I would think it was an old B&Q flower pot, how can they tell so quickly?
My garden here in Dover (an area which is heaving with Roman stuff and a bronze age boat etc etc etc), has revealed: an old metal drawer handle, bit of old bottle, lots of silver paper, nails, broken glass, and flints galore, like it was going out of fashion - but of course, none of it carved into natty spear heads.

Obviously coming from a period before spears were invented :0)
