Have a recipe for Curry Goat that I fancy trying out but it says I need "green onions". I know that Caribbean's call "spring onions" or "salad onions", "skellions" - is it the same thing?

I think these are what most people call "spring onions" although in my neck of the woods we call them "Scallions"

Thanks Shaneystar - we are both quite right, "green onions" are the same thing as spring onions, or alternatively "scallions/skellions". Easy enough to find at the supermarket then!

Now I just need to find somewhere local that sells goat meat!!

Thanks for replying.

If you can't find goat, you could use mutton. I'm assured by several caribbean friends that this is an acceptable replacement in the UK.   Have you tried HALAL butchers?

In Wales we call them gibbons...

Hi Ursula - yeah hubby said that mutton is a good alternative - personally have never eaten either but I'll try anything once!!

Lindylou - you call spring onions - "gibbons"????? Why??
Green onions are NOT spring onions.  Green onions are just normal onions, people often call them white onions, but there are 3 main types Green, White and Red.  Green are just normal bronze skinned onions, when you peel them, the layer underneath is green..therefore green onions!!.

I have looked in the glossary of ingredients in the back of the Carribbean Cookbook I am using and it says:

"Green Onions: Jamaicans call these 'skellions', and some North Americans call them 'spring onions'."

I will stick with the spring onions thanks - I don't fancy adding 5 onions to a dish that serves 4 people. Our guts will be off for weeks!
