ho do i format a hard drive

i need to put a new version of windows (7) on my laptop but when i put the disc in and put it on it didn't format my hard drive it just over wrote it and the old system is still on the HD and taken all my HD space (left with 55 gb) please help it asks where i want it and it said it would over write it but not much space left... cheers

I think you just need to right click on the drive and a drop down box will appear. Just click on format.

it says you cant format this volume as it contains a version of windows that you are using
Is this an upgrade disc or a full version?
If you wish to reformat your hard drive and there is only one as in your laptop . I would download on to a usb stick a program called Active Kill Disk put it in your computer and let it do its thing. Another way would be to remove the harddrive and attach it to another computer via a usb adapter and use the Windows program on the remote computer to do it and once done reinstall it in your laptop and then do the clean install . I am assuming that your previous OS was XP
