Why can't I get my meringues to cook properly?

They end up either burnt to a crisp or so undercooked they squidge down to nothing.

I beat them to within an inch of their lives add the sugar beat a bit more then cook but they always seem to be horrible.

tambourine asked the same question two questions below yours. Bakinglady tells you how it's done. I add the sugar teaspoon by teaspoon instead of a third by third. You need a cool oven and let them dry out in the oven overnight.
