1d is unclued - I'm expecting a major pennydrop moment any time now! I'm thinking MESA for 12d (as it's a tor with flat top in US) but again can't parse the rest of the clue...
I've progressed a bit as I have connected 29a & 42a which provided the source of the work.
It would be a great help if you could tell me the 2nd & 5th letters in 24d (eulogia!), what should replace the L in 16a & any hint you have for 1d & 26d.
If you have the work then that's the key to all eight unclued entries (two per 'subject' of the book - making eight two-word phrases or names). 24d is a similarly formed plural - n and m are the letters you ask for. My MESA was right for 12d (a mesail is a visor). 26d is another v obscure word! It's HE plus a word for 'dons' minus SS (for ship). Hope that's enough help!
Yes I have the work ( I enjoyed the EV connection) and the 'gang' but can't deduce all the associations.
Your kind tips will help and I hope to get there eventually.
Thank you. You are clearly an expert in the field.
No problem! As you clearly prefer tips rather than bald answers:
using the order of the subjects listed on Wikipedia, the first subject's first 'name' links with 19A and his second with the down entry after 28A (these associations are a two-word phrase and a novelist). The second subject listed links to the down entry from the second letter in 28A; and the across entry after 28A (to give a plant and a DJ).
