You should say that this is the EV. Try researching Esau...

Thank you for the answer

I understand the crossword is in a pull out supplement in the Sunday Telegraph - does it make any difference?
Well yes, because the Sunday Telegraph is a different puzzle to the EV. Many people (including me) only do thematics like the EV.

Thank you again.

I am asking on behalf of an elderly friend and, if there is a next time I will put the proper heading.

Can you help with the other two clues please?
Haven't got those yet myself! I have ??A??ES if that helps. Not happy with the OG though...
Question Author
The O is from cosy (35d) & G from eulogia (24d).

Hope they are correct.

Cheers
Yes I have both but couldn't explain eulogia fully.
Thanks.

He is also stuck on the important LH side.
1d RE??L??
12d M??i

Any ideas?
Hi QM

I've been roped in to help as well.
1d is unclued - I'm expecting a major pennydrop moment any time now! I'm thinking MESA for 12d (as it's a tor with flat top in US) but again can't parse the rest of the clue...
Completely cracked this now if any help is needed. Eulogia is wrong, as I suspected, as are the i in 12d and the l in 1d.
Question Author
I've progressed a bit as I have connected 29a & 42a which provided the source of the work.

It would be a great help if you could tell me the 2nd & 5th letters in 24d (eulogia!), what should replace the L in 16a & any hint you have for 1d & 26d.

Thanks for your offer.
If you have the work then that's the key to all eight unclued entries (two per 'subject' of the book - making eight two-word phrases or names). 24d is a similarly formed plural - n and m are the letters you ask for. My MESA was right for 12d (a mesail is a visor). 26d is another v obscure word! It's HE plus a word for 'dons' minus SS (for ship). Hope that's enough help!
Question Author
thanks again quizmonkey.

Yes I have the work ( I enjoyed the EV connection) and the 'gang' but can't deduce all the associations.
Your kind tips will help and I hope to get there eventually.

Thank you. You are clearly an expert in the field.
No problem! As you clearly prefer tips rather than bald answers:
using the order of the subjects listed on Wikipedia, the first subject's first 'name' links with 19A and his second with the down entry after 28A (these associations are a two-word phrase and a novelist). The second subject listed links to the down entry from the second letter in 28A; and the across entry after 28A (to give a plant and a DJ).

That should get you going!
Question Author
That's superb!

I was starting to wonder how I would match the down solution from the 2nd letter in 28a
with anything!

Thanks.
