There is a question a little earlier today from Rojash, the answer (Indeed self answered) to which is "enable memory mapping"

My set-up is not a lot different viz.: i7 920, 2 x 2 GB DDR3, 1GB PCI Express Graphic Card

Like Rojash a chunk of my Memory has been subsumed somewhere else

I have checked the BIOS and can find no direct reference to Memory Mapping

Should I be concerned about the 'missing' memory ?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R. BIOS - I can't seem to determine a version all I can see is AWARD Software dated 2009 (That's when the M/C was built)

Can see no references like that
"I run XP 32 Bit"

There's your answer.

32bit versions of windows can not see anything over 4GB of memory and some of that is reserved for other things. you will never see the full 4GB available on a 32 bit OS
CF just beat me to it - again!

When you boot up, does the POST report 4096MB RAM? If you go into the BIOS, does it report 4096 RAM there, or a slightly smaller number...?

Thanks to you both, will revert to your last question tomorrow Mark
Your motherboard specs state upto 16GB of RAM supported, so give it a 64 bit version of Windows 7 and you should be fine with the correct BIOS settings (Which I believe is where Markrae is going)

I downloaded the manual for this motherboard and, like the OP, can't see anything which looks remotely like memory remapping. So, as it's a fairly recent board (because of the i7 CPU), I'm assuming that it doesn't support disabling it...

The CMOS set-up reports 4093, the system reports 3250

Many thanks to you both for the effort you have put in

As an ancillary note, I had this M/C built and requested that it be delivered naked with all the software intact as I was rusty and had not got "my hands dirty" since DOS and before. It is likely that I have missed a few tricks in the installation

I recall a rather lively debate some weeks/months ago that you were involved in, the nub of which was do CPUs have fans. Well, this one does, having had to go into set-up a few times in the last few hours has reminded me that the system monitors speeds & temperatures of the CPU & PSU fans

Rgds to you both
> The CMOS set-up reports 4093, the system reports 3250

All is well, then.
