Well, I don't see that you were at all.
Ignore them.

oh that's ok then. i am very much against pirating and illegal copying of any kind!

thanks x
You bought an album for a friend and printed off the matching cover for it to give to them. From a reputable site.
No problem.
Obviously AlBags is ignorant of both UK Copyright Law and the Terms of Service of iTunes.

Copyright infringement #1 - All downloaded media content is for personal use only. It is a breach of licence to buy and download an album for a friend since the only way for the friend to receive the content you have downloaded is to redistribute it to them.

Copyright infringement #2 - Cover art is provided under limited licence for personal use with the iTunes application and no other usage is endorsed by iTunes.

The only legal way your friend may receive iTunes content for which you have paid is for them to download it using a Gift Certificate or equivalent transaction.
How is what Crisgal did any different from her going into a shop and buying a CD to gift to a friend?
Question Author
i bought the album, downloaded it onto a cd - legally.
If i choose to keep that cd in my house, or let someone else have it in theirs, shouldn't make any difference to itunes!!

I haven't made two copies, and kept one. The only copy i have is the one i am giving away.
How can that be illegal?

I am genuinely interested in the answer, as I have never been party to illegal downloading. Friends at work pass around the latest blockbuster movies- all illegal. They don't even ask me anymore, as they know my strong feelings on the matter.
Ignore him Cris....

He often plays God like this .. Wannabe Cop of the Year, or something.
There is NO way any court in this land will show ANY interest in what you have done. If you give it away .. or throw it away .. for no personal gain or reward, it does not break the law.

A Berrant ... Why not go and issue a few more parking tickets, eh?
Because you have the original copy that you downloaded on your PC. It is the equivalent of buying the CD, copying it, ,and giving the copy to your friend. ABerrant is correct, the only legal way is to give them a Gift Certificate or perhaps buy them an iTunes voucher.
You may only have made one copy but at the end of the day you bought and paid for one copy but you ended up with two copies - the original and your copied version. As I see it the artist involved is only going to receive the royalties for the one purchased copy and won't receive a penny for the one you copied. Of course it's an infringement of copyright and of course it's wrong and, ultimately, illegal!

i'm not having this!
I haven't got two copies!
I have only got one copy!
i don't want a copy for myself. There is only one cd - the one for a gift.
lol this thread amuses me. I would just give your gift away and not worry about it. You bought it legally you are now giving it away as a gift, surley that is the same as if you walked into a shop and bought a cd! And even if it isn't who is going to know?
Question Author
hi greedy! I know - i should just let it go but i really don't get it!

I AM giving the Cd away, illegal or not, but it still bugs the hell out of me that I'm doing something illegal.

If i delete the mp3 version, and only have a cd, then there aren't two copies are there?

Is THAT legal? For Funks Sake!
I have re-read your previous comments and rather than see that I am wrong and just shut up and slope off, I'm man enough to say openly that I am a fool who should read and then re-read a comment before replying. No you haven't broken any laws if you only downloaded the one copy and then gave it away. I stand corrected and offer my profuse apologies to you! : /
Just carry on Cris ...
Good luck to you : )
lol Krusty - =)

thanks krusty. I am giving the cd today, and it will feel much nicer now that i know i won't be arrested!
thanks to all my supporters ♥ :)
