Identifying a bird

Yesterday in my front garden I saw a bird with a cream coloured breast with chocolate brown patches. The resyt of the feathers from memory were brownish. It was lager than a blackbird I would say. Any clues to what it might have been please

If it was larger than a blackbird then it may have been a Mistle Thrush.

Definitely sounds like a thrush though. You are lucky. Song thrushes are on the decline unfortunately.

How can I help in encouraging them to stay and perhaps inrease in numbers

If you have a garden plant lots of bird friendly shrubs and plants and plenty of places that encourage them to nest. Feed them regularly and provide water for bathing and drinking. You can find lists of plants to encourage wild life and birds if you google. You need to encourage insect life as well. Inner city gardens can provide wonderful havens for birds.

You are lucky to have had him visit. I live in the middle of the country and we have only seen about 2 in 30 years. They nested in one of our apple trees! :o)
