Has anyone else had problems? My daughter was advised to avoid this type when purchasing a new model. Looking them up on Google it would appear that they have a very short life and are often uneconomical to repair.

I've had mine for about 12 years, a big Bosch jobbie.. never had a problem with it.

Thanks for your reply. Is yours a "Frost free" type with a fan?
it is.. my only problem is that I can't get to change the light bulb, which went about 2 years ago! also, you need to cover food in the fridge or it can get dried out.

I'd like to think the newer models are better than my old one, and much cheaper.
Good quality brand .. especially German = long life.
In my experience .. Hotpoint .. Electro .. etc = trouble.
Simples.
We've had a big Zanussi for about 9 years and it's been fantastic. There was a problem just after we got it (the freezer was frosting a little bit) but Zanussi fitted a new door and we've never looked back.
We have an upright fridgefreezer which has been steaming along for at least 20 years ( hav have had to replace the fridge light bulb once and I have to manually de frost it every 4 months or so but that is not a problem. I would recommend this machine to any one. The name is Electra and it was manufactured in Italy
Mine is Hoover upright, self-defroster.....been humming along for 35y - never needed any repairs.
