'Fifth column' - origin?

What is the origin of the phrase 'fifth column'? To me, it sounds of military provenance, but I can't go further than that. Any answers??

From the Spanish Civil War. Franco's forces (usually) attacked in 4 columns - with the "Fifth Column" being sympathisers within the attacked town/city.
