If you're after fitting a conventional gas fire the size is no problem 'cos the fire sits in front and just vents its exhaust through a plate up your flue.

If you want an ornamental type real gas fire then I suggest you Goooogle for manufacturers who will give dimensions of their products.  Most of these fires will fit most hearths.  You will almost certainly need a flue liner and chimney cowl to comply with regs.
