What is the meaning of "this hardly counted as drinking before noon" in the following sentences?

 

Fache strode to the back of the plane and poured himself a hard drink. It was early, but he had not yet slept, so this hardly counted as drinking before noon.

A lot of people have the belief that if they don't drink alcohol until after 12 noon, then they don't have a drinking problem.  (Someone who wakes up at 9AM and has a shot of whiskey might be considered an alcoholic.)  Anyway, Fache has been up all night, so even though it's early morning, to him it's still technically evening (because he hasn't been to bed), so it's acceptable to have an alcoholic drink.
Yeah, it is a bit of a joke again, kjc, Fache is not drinking early - a very bad thing - but he is drinking late - very late.
