Thanks both x
It is strongly implied by his uncle, Arkwright, that his mother (Arkwright's sister) was an unmarried mother who died young, leaving young Granville to be brought up by his uncle.

Assuming that his mother registered Granville's birth, should would almost certainly have done so under her maiden name which would, obviously, also have been Arkwright.

In which case, I think it can be safely assumed that Granville's surname must be Arkwright too. Can anyone think of any sensible reason why it wouldn't...?
That's right. He was only ever known as Granville. Similarly, his uncle was simply Arkwright.
but IMDB has HIM down as Albert Arkwright
Ooops! Flurry of answers while I was writing mine! The "That's right" referred to 4getmenot's reply. I'm not sure it was ever the case that Arkwright was a surname.
Oh yes, so it does, bibblebub. But where did IMDb get its info from? Both the BBC and Radio Times comedy guides simply give the name Arkwright.

OMG!! WHat have I started?? Great series though .... just watching it on DVD...... priceless!

Arkwright is a very common Yorkshire surname, and it would be extremely unlikely for it to be used as a first name.

Besides, other characters regularly addressed him as "Mr Arkwright"...
I wonder if the name Albert was used in the original pilot from the series "7 of 1"
According to wiki it is - "Albert E. Arkwright" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkwright_%28Op

and "Granville" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granville_%28Op
en_All_Hours%29).

I didn't enjoy the programme but my parents loved it.
