Anybody know what this phrase means? (The spelling is optional). Not sure where or when I first heard it, or if I was just in an illegal state of mind and misheard something somebody said, but it keeps coming back and bothering me.
Any ideas?

Perhaps this:

qui vive
n a state of alertness, in the phrase on the qui vive.
[From the French sentry's challenge, literally (long) live who?, ie whom do you support?, from qui who, and vive, 3rd pers sing pr subjunctive of vivre to live, from L v\-ivere]
Yes, the regular saying, a warning, is 'Be on the qui vive for that !' 'Qui vive' sounds like 'kee veeve' but could be misheard as 'kee vee'. The French sentry's challenge is more interesting than our 'Who goes there!' !
