My son is taking his driving test on 19th April. He turns 18 on 15th March.I have found out about getting him insured on my car through my company and they have quoted me almost an extra £1500 per year!!!I am fully comp and only have a Suzuki Jimny 1.3 so it's not like it's a big sports car.I have been told that some insurance companies do "part time"insurance.ie I use my car during the day for work but he can then use it in the evenings at a reduced rate??This sounds a bit bizarre to me but if it is right can anyone tell me what company I could get this through or if any of you lovely Abers know of any companies I could get cheaper insurance for him from.
TIA

Try tesco car insurance, you can do a quote online, at his age my insurance was £600 extra and I had a Drink drive on my licence. That was on a class 2 group, fully comp with my mum having 9+ years NCB.
Who are you insured with if you don't mind me asking?
"cheap" and "new young driver" do not go together i'm afraid
bednobs I agree but £1500+ extra, **** that. chilliwitch can do so much better. Because I'm bored at the moment I will do a quote for me on my mums insurance - using the information I have above, I will see how cheap I can get it. I don't use the car comparison websites either, I've had a bad experience with them!

Cheers diz,W reg suzuki jimny 1.3 jlx.lil ole banger!!
Banger? it was made in 1980?
Please tell me it wasn't produced in 1980, how is it still running?
Oh sorry my bad, it's year 2000
Don't bother with Tesco, they clearly don't like new drivers anymore. They want around £1000 extra. I just inputted that he was 19 and not 20 (having held his licence for a year) and it dropped by £600 - How wrong is that!

Ahh thanx for looking Diz,I don't think I'll be able to afford to get him insured.Insurance will cost more than the car is worth!!!Will maybe buy him a new pushbike!!
Thanks for all your help
Hi, I think that the part time insurance you are talking about is done the other way around. Some companies do offer cheaper insurance if the car is used in the day but only until early evenings. My son's used Quinn Direct when they had just passed their tests and found it to be fairly reasonable. Worth a try.
Have you asked for prices for him to be main insured but with yourself as a named driver?
The insurance may well be more than the car is worth, its the same for a lot of new drivers, but its not covering just the car, its covering the damage to others that the inexperienced driver can cause.
sounds strange but try the national farmers union. and no you do not have to be a farmer. bet you'll get the best quote of them. i had same probs as i got silly quotes when i was younger.
If you do decide in the future, remember Direct Line. I had to insure my daughter(19). Other co. quoted £1500 etc except D Line who said £890
