I am tearing my hair out on this one.

Just recently my PC will crash if I click on a link that opens up a new window. On websites like this one its ok because each link opens in the existing window.

Trouble is on websites that link to another part of the site, or a different site all together, the computer does nothing for about 10 seconds then I get a windows message telling me there has been an error and offering me the chance to send an error report (which I do) . Then all open Windows close and I have to open Iexplorer again.

I have tried Spybot to remove any nastys

I have tried my Virus software and it is clear

I have also tried using the Windows XP tool for restoring your PC from a previous save point,.

None of these have worked.

Does anyone have any ideas?

thanks for answering, I doubt its the memory as the PC is only 4 months old and I rarely save/install anything.

I'll give your link a try thanks

Maybe your registry is corrupted a little.

Try to reinstall Internet Explorer. If that doesn't work (or even if it does!) try Mozilla Firefox as a browser for a while.

try using firefox:

www.mozilla.org/firefox

get a decent tab plugin:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Tabbed%20Browsing&numpg=10&id=625

Forgive me if you've already done this Mr.Ix but  have you:

  1. Deleted all cookies
  2. Deleted Tempory Internet Files plus all Offline Content.
  3. Used Disk Cleanup.
  4. Deleted Document link from Startup Menu.

Hope you find the answer. If not telephone the shop where you purchased the machine they will help you.

I've had this happening the last few days too, have sent about 6 reports, mine is turning on 'Work Offline' when i change links, like you have run all the checks and am virus free, I blame Bill Gates. only had it happen once today so maybe things are improving. :)

Sounds like Internet Explorer needs to be re-installed. Once that is done, run Windows Update (from within Internet Explorer under the Tools menu, or http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp).

Make sure you install all the updates that are registered as critical. Be prepared, this may take a long time if you have not done this before.
