On the 18th of September 2006 every UK (not from the UK? see the links on the right for information on other countries laws) child under the age of 12 must (see ‘any exceptions?’) use a car seat when travelling in either the front or back of a car. According to government statistics this could save up to 2000 children per year from death or injury on British roads.

Who is affected?
Every child under the age of 12 who measures less than 135cm (4ft 5in). However, the Department for Transport recommends that children should continue using booster cushions or booster seats until they are 150cm (4ft 11in) tall.
Nooooooooo! please don't do it.

From wendillas answer above:

use a car seat when travelling in either the front or back of a car

Yes you can. I did in the past especially when carrying more than my own two - I couldn't fit 3 boosters in the back - not sure whether no booster in back seat or booster in front seat was safer. i also use to do it to split my two up as to me, them fighting in the back was more of a risk to me crashing the car than having one of them in the front in a car seat and with air bags.

Thankfully they are both now past the booster seat stage, but I still have to carry them for their friends!
