I was getting it twice a year for about five years, and eventually was sent to a consultant, as they have to run various tests before they can precribe allupurinol. I am now on allupurinol, 1 tablet a day for the rest of my life - which trust me, is better than getting gout (haven't had a flare up since I've been on it - the past two years).
Gout is the most painful form of arthritis - but, thankfully, the most easilly treatable as well.
I should not get gout - I'm reasonably young, fit, healthy and have a reasonably good diet - unfortunately, I inherited a defective gene from my father (together with a big nose - but thats by the by).
First - a fallacy: alcohol does not bring on gout - it may exacerbate it, but it does not being it on.
Avoid food high in purines - Liver, Peas, Shellfish, Marmite etc...
Drink lots of water and eat lots of cherries and celery.
Have never heard of the bi-carb thing - and this is after a lot of research, but may just be that I've missed that little gem.
One interesting point - and this was in a leaflet printed by the arthritis society - people who suffer from gout generally have an above average IQ - I love trotting out that little pearl!!!
