are simile and metaphor the same, if not , what are the differences please

Simile is where you say something is like something else, or as something else - e.g. My throat is as dry as a bone. Metaphor is when you say something is something else for literary effect - e.g. My car is a rocket.
Or you could combine the two 'as tragic as a lake of tears' perhaps.
