One of my dogs has become addicted to butter and will go to any lengths to get it. I plan to spike a pack (that's generally what she eats..full packs) with something to put her off. Putting the butter away is not an option wen in other people houses and she has learn't to cease every opportunity.
Any suggestions for a safe substance to spike the butter with?

I had a Neapolitan Mastiff lass a few years back who had been starved and beaten before she came to me. She would steal ANY food and she was tall enough to just take off the table. I was advised to make a sandwich with chill powder in. I did and she took it, ate it and came back for more. She eventually stopped stealing when she was secure enough. My present dog would not even take meat off the floor if I'd dropped it. I have to pick it up and give it to him. When he was a puppy I left an open packet of chocolate digos on the low coffee table and came back to find them untouched. This is not my training but a very moral dog. Does your dog get a lot of attention when she steals? Try just ignoring it and she may well stop.

All,
will try the tin can idea and see how it goes.

Thug, the attention she gets is only her trying to get the item swallowed whilst i have my hand in her throat and a lot of shouting. She'd then get put outside which she hates.
She didn't get any butter but did get the Christmas ham which was wrapped up in foil with the turkey carcass. Genius
One of our Jack Russells stole a pack of butter, was very ill and vet told us that the amount of butter he ate could cause liver damage
