I can't remember its name but it was very distinctive: these children were in a house where all sorts of adventures happened, while outside it was pitch black in all directions, except for the eyes and groaning noises ( I think) of these presumed monsters who were coming closer and closer, week after week. There must have been some kind of timeslip or sci-fi element to it but I can't remember.

I know it sounds like a bad dream but I've mentioned it to a friend who's the same age as me and he remembers it too. Or maybe we just had the same dream! It was possibly around 1972-73. The Magic Roundabout it wasn't.

Fantastic: "Escape Into Night" is definitely it. Well done and thanks very much smorodina. I was 9 years old at the time and used to watch it with Andrew Rawnsley, who now writes for the Observer and does political journalism for the BBC. As the online commentaries observe, it was those stones with their eyes which really freaked us out - but it was also interesting in the mixing of real and imaginary worlds and the psychological tension. A year or two later I read Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, and despite the great differences in genre there's a surprising amount of overlap between the two stories.

Also see http://www.action-tv.org.uk/guides/escapenight.htm, which fills out more detail of the story and confirms it's the one I remember
