You could check with Experian/HPI.

I assume the vendor has a V5 and the details on there do not match those on the car? If this is the case, I would strongly suggest you walk away.

I don't know how many geneuine accidents I see where someone has bought a car with a false identity - inevitably the car was stolen at some point, and as such the current keeper is not the legal owner, losing out big time as we would not pay the claim.

If you have the registration (or VIN), I can run some checks for you if you would be happy to post it on here
how have you already checked ?
Walk away now!

There are thousands of genuine cars out there! Do not buy a pig in a poke!
If the Reg and VIN on the V5 do not match the car then walk away, but if the reg on a garage computer system is incorrect it not a problem. My Seat Leon was a cosha car ex Seat press car, but the garage trying to put a new catylist on it found the reg was a Toledo, the press fleet had swopped the reg numbers round when they were registers.
No for security reason the checking will not allow access to the VIN unless you have the correct VIN.

With something like this I would look for a new car as this problem is hard to resolve.
