8d Protective covering isn't designed for a plucky player (8) Seems to be 'lutanist' but is 'luta' a protective covering? 11a Pole bird found on shore(5) If 'lutanist' is right, might this be 'swift'? But how does it work? Help please . . .

Lutenist - lute (2) is given in Chambers as " clay,cement or other material used as a protective covering"

Thank you Slaney & Kayakamina. I should have been thinking of 'lutenist' instead of 'lutanist'. Even then I didn't know 'lute' was also a protective covering, nor that 'stilt' was a seashore bird.
